Day 15 - Haines, AK to Haines Junction, YK - via the Haines Hwy

July 14th, 2010

The 152-mile Haines Hwy was constructed in 1943-1944 as an emergency supply line after Japan attacked the Aleutian Islands. After there was no longer a threat, the road was not maintained with any regularity.

It was not open for winter travel until 1963.

There are 39.37 inches per meter

Go figure!

Not sure why this mile is historic but it's a good picture of Wm and Peter.

The views were spectacular.

Million Dollar Water Falls

Our only wildlife viewing - a marmot.

Today's wildflower: the Twin Flower

This delicate little plant (2-3 inches tall) is very fragrant.

William (the sweetheart) was willing to take the Twin Flower picture for me.

  1. Hi,
Glad all is going well. I am enjoying revisiting many of these sites and surrounding areas. I love your humor! Pulling onto the ferry with a long camper would be a bit tricky. It is amazing that the boat still floats with all those vehicles on it. Enjoy and drive carefully.
